Jewelry Organizing Weekend Fun

I hope everyone is enjoying their long holiday weekend!  As the Mr. will tell you, I'm not one to spend my days off sitting around.  I have to accomplish something or all week I have my "to do" list running through my head.  Since I'm saving my pennies for a couple of office projects, I wanted to do something super inexpensive.  With the holidays just around the corner, I figured now would be a great time to catch up on some organization around our abode so we can focus on the important things (like sweet treats and time with family) once November and December roll around.  It didn't take me long to find my first task at hand...my jewelry clutter.  Here's the stash:

Yep, those are gallon size Ziploc baggies filled with jewelry.  Between our wedding, honeymoon, moving into the new house, and a couple of trips in between, that's where everything ended up after packing and unpacking and repacking.  So I did what any good organizer would do.  Time to sort.  Here's my donate pile:

If you are having a hard time getting rid of items, I like the 1 year rule.  If you're still having trouble, watch one episode of Hoarders and you'll be cured.  I found a great bowl at TJ Maxx for $3.99 and thought it would be the perfect jewelry holder.

When looking for a jewelry bowl, make sure it's got high sides for those longer earrings and large enough to hold all of your goodies.  Here she is, all full and serving her purpose!

And in her new home on my dresser:

So, I've been thinking...

It's no secret.  I have a thing for owls.  They are popping up everywhere in our house and this pillow will be part of our decor family soon!

So, I've been thinking.   I have this huge empty corner that would be the perfect spot for a nice big piece of subway art.  So off to Etsy I went and WOW--$250 for the size I need (roughly 4' x 2 1/2').  No.Thank you.  Then, I stumbled upon this beauty by House of Smiths and fell in love.

If I don't post for a few days, you know where I am.  I'll be cutting, cutting, and cutting some more.  Then sanding and gluing and painting...oh my!  Whew!  It's gonna be a busy week!

P.S.S.  Remember my dresser makeover?  I finished painting our bed frame (which also sported matching blonde wood just like the dresser) and painting the room (which donned the yellow walls you've seen throughout).  So I finally added PROGRESS shots of our Master Bedroom to the Our Home tab!  No real BEFORE shots because I didn't realize how muy importante that was in the beginning of this whole journey!  Doy.  I'll do better, I promise.

Extreme Makeover--Dresser Edition! (Completed!!)

I've been hard at work on the body of my dresser, repeating the steps I showed you here.  So take one more look at my lovely dresser before:

I never thought I would be excited to have this dresser in our bedroom, but I'm in love!  Have a great day!

Extreme Makeover--Dresser Edition! (Sneak Peek)

We all have them--hand-me-down furniture from your mom's great aunt, or those really great pieces we bring with us from high school, to college, to married life.  Take my husband's dresser for instance:

He's had this beauty since the good ole high school days.  While the drawers work perfectly fine and it's nice and sturdy, it isn't exactly easy on the eyes.  So I decided this would be the perfect item for my first run at painting furniture.  First things first, I turned to Google.  I found a great tutorial on the YHL site and decided to run with it!  Now that I had my how-to guide, I made a trip to Lowe's to round up my supplies.  Here's my loot:

Step 1: I removed all of the knobs from the drawers.

Step 2:  I lightly sanded her with a fine sanding block.

 

Step 3:  Wipe down entire area with a damp rag to clean up your surface.

Step 4:  Time to prime!!  I purchased Kilz Original oil based interior/exterior primer.  Since primer doesn't go on all that even, just get a nice (not too thick) coat over your entire surface.

Step 5: Paint 'til you drop!  I chose Valspar Ultra Premium in one of their hundreds of white options.

Be sure to let each coat dry completely before you apply another.  The goal here is thin  and even, not thick and drippy.....Four coats later, my drawers are complete!  Time to tackle the main part of the dresser!

I also wanted to update the knobs.  Since I needed 16 total, I knew I would have to find a good deal in order to keep on track with my budget.  I found a rockstar deal here at World Market on these beauties:

They were just $5.98 for 4 + shipping.  I signed up to receive e-mails and got a code for an additional 10% off my entire purchase.  Total cost for knobs (including shipping)=$29 (that's a sweet $1.81 per knob!)
